How to evaluate the volume of translation?
The volume of translation is calculated based on the word count in the full source text. Be careful, some translators or agencies estimate word count based on the target (translation) text, not the source. Taking word count in the source text allows to obtain more precise numbers for cost and delivery time, because in this case the word count is known beforehand.
Sometimes the volume cannot be measured in word, e.g., in drawings or other graphic materials. Often it is difficult to estimate the volume of work for Excel spreadsheets in words because the spreadheets may require extensive graphical work. Should it be the case, the volume of work is to be taken based on the time to be spent (in hours).
Translation word count should not include arays of number, examples of computer programs and other fragments that do not need to be translated. Numbers within sentences in the text are, as a rule, included in the word count. Word count is usually taken using MS Word utility Word Count or by means of other software.
