What is translation quality?

The concept of translation quality has long been a subject of disagreements and arguments. The existing definition of “translation norm” is controversial and does not help in practice.
At Language Interface we have adopted the following definition of informational/technical translation:

How many translators will work on my text?

Ideally there will be a single translator (not counting the editor), which would ensure best terminological/lexical consistency and simplify quality control.

What quality standards are established and used in translation industry?

Efforts have been repeatedly applied to develop and implement translation quality standards. The most significant among these are:

  • European Union Standard prEN-15038
  • Society of Automotive Engeneers standard SAE J2450
  • ASTM F2575 – 06, Standard Guide for Quality Assurance in Translation
